Chief executive moving to different nursing charity

The head of the Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland (QNIS) has announced she will step down to run a charity supporting nurse-led improvement projects.

Professor Clare Cable, chief executive and nurse director of the QNIS, announced today that she will be departing her current role to lead the Burdett Trust for Nursing.

“It has been the most fulfilling and enjoyable time of my career”

Professor Cable, a children’s nurse by background, leaves the QNIS after 10 years in the organisation, a decision she said was “immensely hard”, adding: “It has been the most fulfilling and enjoyable time of my career.

“To have led a charity where together we have created spaces for community nurses to find ways to flourish and enable the health of some of Scotland’s most disadvantaged citizens, has been a joy and a privilege.”

She joins the Burdett Trust as its chief executive in October 2024, replacing Shirley Baines, who has herself spent almost two decades in post.

Professor Cable’s new organisation provides grants to nurses contributing towards healthcare improvements.

Quality improvement schemes backed by the Burdett Trust have, in the past, included nurse-led projects to reduce morbidity and hospitalisation of chronic respiratory diseases, minimise the effects of type-2 diabetes and improve care for cardiovascular disease patients.

Professor Cable added: “I am honoured to have been chosen as the next chief executive of this important charity that exemplifies everything I have worked for during my career.”

Alan Gibbs, chair of trustees at the Burdett Trust, added: “I am delighted to welcome Clare as our new chief executive.

“She brings a wealth of nursing experience to the role, and I am sure she will continue to build the trust’s legacy and reputation for excellence, and advance its strategic mission to put nurses at the heart of healthcare leadership.”

Professor Cable, while at QNIS, oversaw the reintroduction of the Queen’s Nurse title in Scotland.

She is an honorary professor at Queen Margaret University Edinburgh and a visiting professor at the University of the Highlands and Islands.

Before taking on her QNIS role in 2014, Professor Cable had worked at the Royal College of Nursing as a policy advisor.

Speaking after the announcement of Professor Cable’s departure, QNIS Council chair Erica Reid said: “Clare has demonstrated exceptional leadership during her time at QNIS and although we are delighted that she will continue to support nurses in her new position, we will be sorry to see her go.”

The QNIS said it was now seeking a new chief executive ahead of Professor Cable’s departure later this year.
