Nursing Student, Paralyzed In a Drive By Shooting, Graduates With Twin Sister
Ashley and Alexandria Kern, twin nurses from Cheektowaga, New York, recently captured hearts on the Jennifer Hudson Show. Their journey of resilience, dedication, and sisterly support, especially through Ashley’s challenging recovery after a life-altering tragedy, has shone a light on the determination that defines so many healthcare professionals.
Ashley’s Journey: From Paralysis to Pursuing Nursing
Back in March of 2016, Ashley’s life changed dramatically after a drive-by shooting left her paralyzed at the T4 spinal cord level, from the chest down. But rather than allowing this to sideline her dreams, Ashley found new motivation to move forward. With a spirit that refused to be defined by her limitations and the unyielding support of her twin, Alexandria, she embarked on an intense road to recovery.
The Kern twins have a close bond, which became even more important during Ashley’s recovery. Alexandria was by her side every step of the way. Their connection and mutual support became a foundation that fueled them through nursing school’s rigorous demands and into a profession they always dreamed about doing together.
They graduated together from Trocaire College in December of 2023. “It felt amazing watching her go across that stage,” Alexandria said. “I just thought wow, full circle moment right here. She made it. All of the struggles paid off. Doing it side by side was the best part.”
Appearing on the Jennifer Hudson Show gave Ashley and Alexandria a chance to tell their story to people across the country, highlighting the strength of healthcare professionals and the unique paths that lead them into the field.
Ashley shared with Hudson why representation and diversity within the nursing field is so important to her, “I don’t think we have enough people with different abilities that are in the workforce, and I think it’s because they think they can’t do it or that they can’t work, because we don’t see enough of it.” It’s a game-changer when you actually see that representation. If a nurse in a wheelchair had rolled into Ashley’s room during her own recovery, she said “it would’ve completely changed my life from just seeing that.”
As a special gift, Hudson gifted the twins with a 4-night stay at a Wyndham property of their choice so they could live their best lives!
Ashley and Alexandria’s story shines as an example to anyone who’s faced challenges or questioned if they could still pursue their dreams. They’ve shown that, with determination and support, you can make it—even if the path isn’t easy.
