Off-Duty Nurse Saves Cadet in Parachute Freefall Emergency

In 2023, Nurse Alicia Shamblin was in the right place at the right time when she saved the life of Cadet Boaz Abramoff as his parachute malfunctioned. Two years later, Abramoff honors Nurse Shamblin’s heroic efforts and credits her with his life.
On July 31, 2023, a routine training day at the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) turned into a life-or-death emergency when Cadet 3rd Class Boaz Abramoff’s parachute malfunctioned during freefall exercises.
Driving nearby was Alicia Shamblin, a registered nurse and military spouse. Without hesitation, she pulled her car over, raced down a rocky slope, and reached the tracks where Abramoff was about to crash land.
“My first thought was that cadet is someone’s son or daughter,” Shamblin said in a report by Fox 21 News.
She stabilized him, cleared his airway, and stayed by his side until emergency responders arrived. Her actions are now credited with saving his life.
Nearly two years later, Shamblin was honored at a formal ceremony at Polaris Hall on March 31, 2025. The U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Wing recognized her for her bravery, quick response, and clinical expertise.
Cadet Abramoff was finally able to meet and personally thank the nurse who saved his life.
“No one knew about the nurse who made it possible,” Abramoff said. “Mrs. Shamblin is the reason I had a chance to fight my way back.”
Medical professionals confirmed that without Shamblin’s intervention, Abramoff would not have survived the impact. Now recovered and continuing his training, Abramoff shared heartfelt words at the ceremony:
“Everything I will do for the rest of my life will be because of her. I hope to serve my country, help others, and build a future, but none of that would be possible without her.”
