School Nurse Wins $115K Age Discrimination Settlement

A school nurse in Robbinsville, New Jersey, has been awarded $115,000 after filing an age discrimination lawsuit against the Robbinsville Public School District, according to a recent report from a New Jersey radio station. Ruthann Jennings, 63, who had served the district as a nurse, alleged that her termination during a workforce reduction was unlawfully influenced by her age.

Nurse Alleges Age Discrimination in Layoff Decision

Jennings’ case stemmed from a reduction in force (RIF) implemented by the Robbinsville Public School District, which officials claimed was necessary due to insufficient state funding. However, Jennings contended in her lawsuit that the decision to eliminate her position was discriminatory, arguing that age played a role in her termination. She alleged that younger, less experienced employees were retained while she was let go.

The lawsuit highlighted systemic concerns about how budget cuts disproportionately impact older workers in schools. 

Settlement Details Provide Financial Relief but No Admission of Wrongdoing

The settlement, finalized recently, awards Jennings $82,000 in compensation, while her attorney received $33,000. The Robbinsville Public School District has not admitted to any wrongdoing as part of the agreement, a common clause in settlement agreements to avoid further legal repercussions.
