Ellen Pompeo Will Play a Nurse Next: ‘Grey’s’ Star Leads Hulu Thriller ‘Not a Sound’

After more than two decades as television’s most famous surgeon, Ellen Pompeo’s next role is a nurse.

The Grey’s Anatomy star is attached to lead and executive produce Not a Sound, a drama in development at Hulu from David E. Kelley Productions, Deadline reported August 27. Pompeo would play Amelia Winn, a disgraced ER nurse who lost her hearing in a hit-and-run accident. When Amelia and her service dog discover the murdered body of a former colleague, she’s pulled into a mystery that could reveal the truth about the accident that upended her life.

The series is based on Heather Gudenkauf’s 2017 bestselling novel* of the same name. Gudenkauf, who is deaf in one ear, has written extensively about characters with hearing loss.

Nurses have spent two decades pointing out that Grey’s Anatomy barely acknowledges the profession that delivers most bedside care. Not a Sound flips that script: the nurse isn’t background scenery, she’s the entire show.

The role is notable for another reason. Amelia is a deaf nurse, and deaf and hard-of-hearing nurses practice across the country in real life, often with accommodations like amplified or visual-display stethoscopes and ASL interpreters. If the series moves forward, it would be one of the highest-profile portrayals of a nurse with a disability in television history.

It also lands in a real nurses-on-TV moment. The Pitt made charge nurse Dana Evans one of the most acclaimed characters on television and won Katherine LaNasa an Emmy for the role, and NBC built an entire comedy around a supervising nurse with St. Denis Medical, a portrayal nurses have embraced. A thriller with a nurse as the sole lead would be the next step up.

• The writers know medical-adjacent thrillers. Matthew Tinker, president of David E. Kelley Productions, and Annakate Chappell are writing the adaptation; the two previously worked together on Big Sky.
• The director is having a moment. Azazel Jacobs, who directed the acclaimed 2024 film His Three Daughters, is attached to direct.
• Pompeo isn’t leaving Grey Sloan. She still stars in Grey’s Anatomy, which returns for Season 23 on October 15, and she’s executive producing the upcoming West Texas spinoff.

Here’s the piece of TV trivia doing the rounds: in March 2005, Kelley’s Boston Legal wrapped its season in ABC’s Sunday 10 p.m. slot, and one week later a new medical drama called Grey’s Anatomy premiered in that exact timeslot. Two decades and one television empire later, Pompeo and Kelley (Big Little Lies, Ally McBeal, The Practice) are finally on the same call sheet.

One caveat for anyone already planning a watch party: Not a Sound is in development, not officially ordered to series. No release date, no additional casting, and development projects don’t always make it to air. But with Pompeo attached to star and produce, and her recent track record at Hulu (Good American Family was just renewed for a second season), this one has better odds than most.

Nurses have gone from Grey’s Anatomy superfans to real-life RNs because of the show. Now the woman who inspired a generation of healthcare careers may finally play a nurse.
