Here is what is known so far, and why nurses across the country are paying close attention.
What Happened in Downtown Oakland
Oakland police responded to a shooting at about 2:46 a.m. on May 31 in the 1400 block of Harrison Street, where they found a 33-year-old man with at least one gunshot wound in a parking lot. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. Investigators, who initially withheld the victim’s name pending family notification, said they were working to determine why he was in Oakland that night.
Nearly a week later, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office identified a suspect. Prosecutors charged Shacory Daniels, 39, of Vallejo, with murder in Solomon’s death, the Bay Area News Group reported. According to that reporting, Daniels has six prior felony convictions and was once shot by Fremont police. The charges are allegations, and Daniels is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
KTVU reporter Henry Lee wrote on X that Daniels was charged in connection with what police described as a robbery attempt near 14th and Harrison streets, adding that investigators tracked a Volkswagen Jetta as part of the case. Authorities have asked anyone with information to contact the Oakland Police Department.

Born and raised in Ghana, Solomon built his nursing career in the Bay Area. He earned an associate degree from Merritt College in Oakland in 2020 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Samuel Merritt University in 2023, and he went on to work at Alameda Health and Kindred Hospital in San Leandro, according to a family fundraiser organized by his brother, Emmanuel Solomon. He was passionate about health education and patient care, and he leaves behind a young daughter and a father in Ghana.
Beyond the bedside, Solomon reached a wide audience as a health content creator on YouTube and Facebook, sharing accessible lessons on healthy living.
Tributes have poured in since his death. Nurse-focused communities have also stepped in to mourn on social media.
The GoFundMe campaign, titled “Honoring Lartey Solomon’s Life and Legacy,” is raising money for funeral expenses and to support his daughter and father during what the family calls an unimaginable loss. As of this writing, the campaign had raised about $2,844 of its $20,000 goal from dozens of donors.
For now, the legal process is just beginning. The murder charge against Daniels is an accusation that prosecutors must prove, and the case is expected to move through Alameda County Superior Court in the weeks ahead.
