How a Nurse Created the Stethoscope Bookends She Couldn’t Find

As healthcare providers, the stethoscope is more than just a tool—it’s a symbol of the profession we’ve dedicated our lives to. It’s draped around our necks during long shifts, tucked into our bags, and becomes part of our identity. Ironically, when I went looking for stethoscope-inspired bookends to decorate my office, I couldn’t find a single pair.

I remember thinking, Surely someone has made these already. After searching everywhere and coming up empty-handed, I had a simple thought: Why not make them myself?

At the time, I was enrolled in the I-Corps program at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where I had the opportunity to work alongside a classmate to transform the idea into a real product. Together, we designed a pair of bookends inspired by the familiar curves of a stethoscope—something that would be both functional and meaningful to healthcare professionals.

Once the design was finalized, I partnered with PartsBadger, a manufacturing company based in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, to bring the concept to life. Watching an idea that started as a simple search in my office become a tangible product was incredibly rewarding.

For me, this was never about creating the next big invention. It was about combining two things I’ve always loved: medicine and creativity. As nurses, we’re constantly solving problems, adapting, and thinking outside the box for our patients. This project reminded me that those same skills can extend far beyond the bedside.

The stethoscope bookends have become a conversation piece in my office, but more importantly, they’ve become a reminder that innovation doesn’t always have to be groundbreaking. Sometimes it starts with noticing something that’s missing and deciding to create it yourself.

I hope this story encourages other nurses and healthcare professionals to pursue the ideas they’ve tucked away in the back of their minds. Whether it’s a product, a quality improvement project, a business, or a creative endeavor, our profession equips us with resilience, curiosity, and determination. Those qualities don’t end when we clock out.
